On Friday, January 27, 2017, beginning at 6:30 PM at the Jamesport Meeting House, (1590 Main Road, Jamesport, NY), the NFEC will be presenting the first of its new North Fork Speaker Series — Living on the Edge, with Kevin McAllister.
Kevin McAllister, founding president of DefendH2O and coastal scientist, will address the physical and ecological implications of climate change here locally. His presentation will include the projected changes in sea level, what it means for our communities and what are the appropriate responses to ensure that our region’s beaches, wetlands and other natural resources remain sustainable…so that our way of life remains sustainable.
Kevin holds undergraduate degrees in Natural Resources Conservation and Marine Biology, as well as a Master’s of Science in Coastal Zone Management. His professional experience spans 30 years, working in government, consultancy and the non-profit sectors of environmental protection.
Back in 2011, Kevin partnered with the Nature Conservancy in another NFEC-sponsored presentation, also held in Jamesport. In this presentation, Kevin and the Nature Conservancy shared new data and computer tools to predict patterns of coastal flooding due to sea level rise and failing wetlands…flooding patterns which were shown to be very accurate in Hurricane Irene later that year. So for this and many other topics, Kevin and the NFEC have been at the forefront of looking out for the best interests of the North Fork, its natural resources and way of life.
