Dark Sky Event at Custer Institute

Dark Sky Event at Custer Institute

APRIL 26, 6:00PM - MIDNIGHT.  CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL DARK SKY WEEK & EARTH DAY.

Discover the night at Custer Observatory as we celebrate the Dark Sky and Earth Day with the North Fork Dark Sky Coalition!

Come visit Custer Institute and Observatory, Long Island's oldest public observatory (est.1927), to experience the dark skies in your neighborhood and learn about what you can do to protect the night sky and planet Earth.

Artificial light at night has revolutionized the way we live and work outdoors, but it has come at a price. When used indiscriminately, outdoor lighting can disrupt wildlife, impact human health, waste money and energy, contribute to climate change, and block our view of the universe. Learn ways that you can appreciate dark, star-filled skies while enjoying the benefits of responsible outdoor lighting. Learn, too, how you can make positive change to protect our planet Earth.

Custer Institute and Observatory is located beneath some of Long Island's darkest skies, where on a clear dark night you can still see the Milky Way galaxy. Come join us in discovering (or re-discovering) the North Fork's night sky!

Events Schedule:

6:00pm - Guided walks through the ReWild native garden within Custer Preserve. Learn about sustainable landscaping for thriving communities, from pollinators to people with ReWild Long Island.

7:00pm- Guided tours of Custer Observatory. Learn about the history of Custer Institute & Observatory and tour the exhibits and facility before dark.

7:45pm - Enjoy a sunset walk through Custer Preserve, a beautiful arboretum surrounding Custer Institute.

8:00pm - Astronomy Talk on the South Lawn "Spring Galaxies Far, Far Away" - see below for details.

8:30pm to midnight - Guided stargazing through telescopes including inside Custer's historic observation dome.

Throughout the event, visit tables by North Fork Dark Sky Coalition, North Fork ReWild, North Fork Environmental Council, North Fork SAP, North Fork Audubon Society and Group For the East End to learn more about their work and some simple things you can do to get involved in protecting the night sky and planet Earth. Live music will also be provided by Marina DeLuca.

8:00PM -SPRING GALAXIES FAR, FAR AWAY (on the south lawn)

Spring is the season of renewal, rejuvenation, growth and galaxies...lots and lots of galaxies! Join stargazing lecturer Randall DiGiuseppe of the Custer Institute & Observatory as he guides you through a multitude of galaxies far, far away including the Leo Triplet, galactic marvels of the Virgo Cluster and the Sombrero Galaxy.

This event is being held outdoors and is open to everyone. Just bring an inquisitive mind, a blanket or chair and your imagination.

Randall DiGiuseppe is a professional artist, lecturer, telescope builder and amateur astronomer for over four decades. He is a lifetime member of the Custer Institute and Observatory and recipient of the Astronomical League’s Messier Award. He conducts lectures on the dynamics, history and art of the night sky throughout the country.

Following the presentation, Observatory staff will provide guided tours of the night sky (weather permitting) through the many telescopes on site, including the apochromatic Zerochromat telescope in our historic observation dome.

Please bring a blanket or chair to enjoy the outdoor presentation.

Registration is not required for this event.  A rain date is scheduled for Saturday, May 3rd in case of inclement weather.

Suggested donation of $5 Adult, $3 Children Under 16, Observatory Members FREE can be made at the door to help support Custer Observatory.

Greenport Repair Cafe

Toss it Away? No way!

Now is the time for all good people to gather a couple things that need fixing, adjusting, sharpening, gluing, mending from your closet, attic or storage space! The next Repair Cafe is fast approaching : May 3, 1-4 in Greenport's Floyd Memorial Library.

So far we have volunteers with bike repair skills, clothes/sweater repair, glue and sharpening skills.

We still need people who can help with electrical, jewelry, wood repairs, pottery repair.

If you've never been to a Repair Cafe get ready to learn some hands on skills as you help the coach examine, disassemble, troubleshoot and try to fix your item. Feel good about saving money while saving useful things from being thrown into our overfull Dumping grounds. . It's also a fun way to meet and brianstorm w strangers and be part of the Fixer and right to repair movement.

Here is a link to a short video about Repair Cafes:

And you can go to www.RepairCafe.org/en for info about history and progress of the repair movement.

If you'd like to volunteer in general ( bring goodies?) or as a coach with some skills and tools to bring along, please email Margaret@nfec1.org with how you'd like to help...Thank you so much in advance.

International Coastal Cleanup Day

International Coastal Cleanup Day

Increased amounts of trash, particularly plastics and lost or discarded fishing gear, are finding their way into the water and creating a threat of entanglement or ingestion for countless marine animals. Plastic bags look like jellyfish and block the digestive tracks of sea turtles. Fishing gear causes entanglements of marine mammals and can lead to injury and death.

Update on the Repair Movement.

On January 2, 2024,  the Repair Cafe International Foundation and the Center for Sustainable Design in Amsterdam held an International Repair Cafe Symposium which I, Margaret attended on Zoom. It was fun and informative and here are a few things I found interesting.

First of all, there is a growing interest in Repairing and the Right to Repair;  in fact it is a Worldwide Movement, helping us mindshift from a resource wasting linear economy to a more sustainable circular economy.

Also, the RC Int'l Foundation is collecting data from all the Repair Cafes through a Repair Monitor Dashboard. This data is being used by communities and countries as evidence to their legislators to institute "Right to Repair" policies.  Here is some of the data: From 2016 to the end of 2023, there have been 2983 RCs  formed worldwide, with 44,745 volunteers and estimated 81,000 items repaired. The RC Monitor Dashboard is keeping track of the types of items repaired and the various things that make repair difficult or impossible. For example, design improvements suggested from data collected by a RC in Surrey, are to stop soldering things that don't need it, and to stop using so many different sized screw heads.

Another impact of the growing movement is that Repair Skills are being brought into school curriculums, some using  the RC Model and Volunteer coaches. Also RC Monitor Dashboard data is showing the need for Reparable Product Design. As an example, in the Netherlands there is a school where students are given an object, with the task to redesign it to make it repairable.

Other discussion topics centered on the Right to Repair efforts going on in Europe and the USA, and how to attract and encourage younger folks to be involved.

The webinar can be viewed on YouTube. Find it on WWW. REPAIRCAFE.ORG,  IT is dIvided into parts, so it is easy to view...

And Please Save the Date and consider volunteering for our 5th North Fork Repair Cafe, being held on May 4, 1-4 PM in collaborations with the FLOYD MEMORIAL LIBRARY IN GREENPORT.

To volunteer or for more information, please email Margaret at Margaret@nfec1.org
